Every paid preparer needs one — every year
If you're paid to prepare federal returns, you must have a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN), and it expires December 31 each year. Renewal opens in the fall through the IRS.
Renew on time
- PTIN renewal typically opens in mid-to-late October.
- Renew before December 31 so you're covered on day one of the season.
- The renewal is done online through your IRS PTIN account and takes about 15 minutes.
Why it matters
Preparing returns for compensation with an expired or missing PTIN can bring IRS penalties under the tax code — and it puts your office at risk. It's a small annual task with big consequences if skipped.
Make it a team checklist
- List every preparer in your office and their PTIN.
- Confirm each renews before the deadline.
- Keep a copy of each preparer's PTIN confirmation on file.
Put PTIN renewal on your fall calendar right next to software renewal. Both protect your season.
