Get Your EFIN Ready for the 2027 Filing Season

Your EFIN is the key to e-filing. Here's how to confirm it's active, keep it in good standing, and avoid the delays that catch offices off guard every January.

Your EFIN is your license to e-file

No valid Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN), no e-filing. Before the season starts, make sure yours is active and in good standing so nothing stops you on opening day.

Confirm your EFIN is active

  • Log in to your IRS e-Services account and check your EFIN status and e-file application summary.
  • Verify the firm name, address, and responsible officials are current.
  • If you've moved, added a location, or changed ownership, update your e-file application before the season.

Watch your EFIN count

The IRS tracks the volume of returns filed under your EFIN. If your numbers look off compared to what you actually filed, it can trigger a review. Reconcile your filed count against your IRS tally each season.

New to e-filing?

If you don't have an EFIN yet, apply now — the IRS suitability check (including fingerprinting where required) can take 45 days or more. See IRS Publication 3112 for the full process. Starting in the fall is cutting it close.

Keep it in good standing

  • Maintain a Written Information Security Plan (see our post on the FTC Safeguards Rule).
  • Protect your EFIN like a credential — never share it outside your authorized staff.
  • Respond promptly to any IRS correspondence about your application.

TaxWallet validates your EFIN at enrollment and renewal so you catch problems early — not on January 15th.
